For a simple way to bring a sophisticated finish to a minimalist space, try rose gold or glass lamp shades for an understated elegance or a grey lamp shade for a modern classic look. Take your time choosing the right one for you - these pointers will help you when choosing the shade that will look perfect in your home,
Lamp shade colour
Start by looking at the room you are decorating. Does it have a minimalistic look with modern clean lines or a traditional homely feel? What is the colour scheme? Warm oranges and rusts, or cool blues? Do you want to enhance and blend with this colour scheme, or contrast and stand out? Perhaps go for a bold colour such as red accent lampshade, or something more subtle and neutral. Also consider the colour, size and style of the base. A long slender wooden base will complement different shades compares to a shorter chunkier metal base. Although there are no hard and fast rules, the shade and base should balance and complement each other.
How will you use your new lamp?
Are you adding a lamp into the room because you need some flexible lighting? Or will it be more decorative? Do you need a bright desk lamp where the light source quality is critical, or do you want the room flooded with a gentle glow? A light coloured or mustard lamp shade will diffuse soft light, where as a dark or black lamp shade will give your room a totally different look. The bulbs you choose are also important, and our light bulb fittings guide will give you a all the information you will need bulb types, LED lights, vintage light bulbs and smart lighting.
Size of your lamp shade
Another important thing to consider is the dimensions. A reading lamp on your bed side table means you can snuggle down with a book, and not have to get out of bed to turn the lights off. Pick a small lampshade that can sit nicely on your bedside table smaller. However, a large lamp will look stunning in a high ceiled room.
Lighting can really help to alter the mood of a room. If you're after overhead lighting, browse our range of ceiling lights that will spread light around a large area. Place them in main areas of your room to provide focused lightening where they help create zones. They can easily be controlled via your light switch - choose a dimmer for a softer glow when you're looking for mood lighting. Use your lighting to create a theme, co-ordinate your ceiling lampshade with your floor lamps or table lamp. Lamps provide indoor lighting that you can move around where and when you need it, and for when you want a softer feel to the atmosphere. Place one on the desk for times you are working late, or the students in the house are burning the midnight oil. Place your table lamps on side tables or console tables around your room to create ambient lighting, or in front of a mirror to make your living area look bigger. This can make areas like hallways look and feel larger and brighter.
Want to up your tech game? Never again must you reach for the light switch with smart lighting. Using your own smartphone or tablet, and Wi-Fi enabled smart bulbs, you can control mood lighting right from your own armchair. No more arguments about who 's going to get up and flick that light switch.
