When is Mother’s Day?

Every year in the UK, Mother's Day falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Mother's Day 2025 is on Sunday 30th March. Around the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated on a range of dates by different countries, all with their own traditions and histories. 

What is Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day wasn’t always about motherhood. The event was named Mothering Sunday, beginning in the 16th century. People return to their "mother church" for a service - the church where a person was baptised, christened or grew up. Through time, domestic servants were given this day off and on their way home, they would pick flowers for the church or their mothers. Following the emergence of the Mothering Sunday Movement in 1914, the UK incorporated the American celebration of mothers and by the middle of the 20th century, the holiday was widely commercialised.
In the modern UK, it’s a celebration of motherhood. Traditionally, people give gifts to their mothers as an appreciation for everything they do. Now it is even celebrated across all generations and between grandparents and grandchildren too.
